El 25 de Abril de 1953 el bi\u00f3logo estadounidense James Watson y el f\u00edsico brit\u00e1nico Francis Crick publicaron un en el cual propusieron un modelo de la estructura del ADN. Este descubrimiento sent\u00f3 las bases para comprender c\u00f3mo se replica y se transmite a trav\u00e9s de generaciones el material gen\u00e9tico y, posteriormente, cu\u00e1les son los mecanismos por los que se originan las\u00a0enfermedades gen\u00e9ticas.<\/p>\n<p>ADN es el nombre qu\u00edmico de la mol\u00e9cula que contiene la informaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica en todos los seres vivos. La mol\u00e9cula consiste en dos cadenas que se enrollan entre ellas para formar una estructura de doble h\u00e9lice. Cada cadena tiene una parte central formada por az\u00facares (desoxirribosa) y grupos fosfato. Enganchado a cada az\u00facar hay una de las siguientes 4 bases: adenina (A), citosina (C), guanina (G), y timina (T). Las dos cadenas se mantienen unidas por enlaces entre las bases; la adenina se enlaza con la timina, y la citosina con la guanina. La secuencia de estas bases a lo largo de la cadena es lo que codifica las instrucciones para formar prote\u00ednas y mol\u00e9culas de ARN.<\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s, en el d\u00eda del ADN, tambi\u00e9n se conmemora la culminaci\u00f3n del Proyecto Genoma Humano.
